WWII Variable Density Glasses with Red Lenses

Description

1944 military variable density glasses with metal box.  They have red Polaroid Tracer Visor lens on, which is cracked at the bottom.

Manufactured by American Optical Company stock No.74-G-79-40, and the glasses are stamped US 1944.

Used in the WWII era to track targets close to and across the face of the sun.  The red fold down plastic visor is used to reduce glare in strong sunlight.  This model of goggle was mainly intended for anti-aircraft gunners and bomber group, according to online info.  The instructions inside the lid have more details too.
