Description

Up for auction is a vintage pressed steel tractor trailer marked Irwin Freightways. This mid-century toy truck is constructed of heavy pressed steel with nice detailing, and remains a desirable example of classic American toy trucking.

Features:

  • Brown and silver painted body with “IRWIN FREIGHTWAYS” lettering on both sides.

  • Detachable cab (currently not firmly attached to trailer, as noted).

  • Trailer with sliding side door and drop-down rear loading ramp.

  • Dual-axle cab and dual-axle trailer for a heavy-duty look.

  • All wheels intact; free-rolling.

Dimensions: Approx. 18" long overall.

Condition

  • Displays moderate playwear: paint loss, scuffs, scratches, and some oxidation.

  • Cab not attached (comes off easily, may need repair/re-attachment).

  • Rear ramp and side door present and functional.

  • Structurally solid with lots of display appeal.

  • Irwin Toy Company (often called Irwin Toys) was a Canadian toy maker, founded in 1926 in Toronto, Ontario.

  • They were known for importing and distributing toys in Canada, but also manufactured some of their own.

  • So while some people assume “Irwin Freightways” was just a fictional trucking name used by Structo or another maker, it actually was produced under the Irwin brand itself.

  • In the mid-20th century, they produced a line of pressed steel trucks, cars, and ride-on toys, often branded with names like Irwin Freightways or Irwin Express.

  • Their pressed steel trucks were similar in style and build to Structo, Hubley, and Nylint, but usually had distinctive branding stamped or painted on the trailers (like your Irwin Freightways example).

  • By the 1960s–70s, Irwin became better known for distributing licensed toys (e.g., Star Wars figures in Canada) and eventually phased out the pressed steel line.
