Description

This is a 19th–early 20th century stoneware ginger beer bottle, salt-glazed and two-tone (tan top, greyish lower body). The impressed mark reads:

“COBURN, LANG & CO.
GINGER BEER”

Key characteristics:

  • Material: Salt-glazed stoneware (typical for ginger beer bottles 1850–1920)

  • Manufacture: Likely wheel-thrown upper portion + molded body, alkaline slip under glaze at the shoulder

  • Form: Tall cylindrical body with tapered neck and small blob top (commonly used for wired corks)

  • Condition: Great piece with normal age related wear some chips on the neck.  Great colors!

  • Use: Bottled ginger beer, a popular carbonated beverage before glass bottle mass production became widespread

  • Measures 9.75" tall

Coburn, Lang & Co. was a regional bottler from Boston, MA.—these stoneware bottles were widely produced in those regions and the bottle’s form and lettering strongly match late Victorian / Edwardian ginger beer containers.
