Description

This bottle is a 19th-century stoneware ginger beer or mineral water bottle, impressed:

“A. L. WALKER”

Key Characteristics

  • Material: Salt-glazed stoneware

  • Color: Pale grey to tan glaze, characteristic of English and early American stonewares

  • Closure Style: Blob-top, used for cork-and-wire fastenings (mid-1800s to early 1900s)

  • Marking: Impressed block lettering “A. L. WALKER”, likely the bottler or merchant

  • Era: Most likely 1870–1895

  • Manufacture: Wheel-thrown or mold-assisted with hand-applied top and glaze

  • Purpose: Typically used to bottle ginger beer, soda water, or mineral water

  • Condition:  Wonderful Antique condition with normal age related wear with some nicks and chips at the neck to be expected.  Great patina and collectors item.

Possible Origin

The surname Walker appears on numerous 19th-century bottles from:

  • England (Bristol, London, Birmingham)

  • Canada (Ontario / Maritimes)

  • Northeastern U.S. (New York, Pennsylvania)

The pale glaze, simple stamping, and tall proportions lean slightly toward British manufacture, but Canadian variants are also similar.
