Description

This is a 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware bottle, used for ginger beer, soda water, or mineral water, stamped:

“W. L. MERRITT”

Key Features

  • Material: High-fired salt-glazed stoneware

  • Color: Rich brown glaze, lightly speckled—typical of mid-1800s production

  • Form: Cylindrical body with broad shoulders tapering to a blob top (for cork/wire closure)

  • Stamping: Impressed lettering “W. L. MERRITT,” likely the bottler or merchant

  • Era: Most likely 1860–1890 based on glaze, proportion, and stamping style

  • Region: Bottles with this form commonly originate from:

    • The United States Northeast

    • Ontario / Eastern Canada

    • England (Bristol, Derbyshire, Staffordshire region potteries)
Without a town name it's hard to place exactly, but the brown glaze strongly suggests Canadian or American manufacture.

    • Condition:  Wonderful Antique condition, Fabulous patina, nice impressed markings and no chips or fractures detected.
