Description

This is a late 19th-century to early 20th-century French-Canadian salt-glazed stoneware jug, stamped in cobalt blue:

**“AMÉDÉE BRAULT

MAGASIN DE
VINS ET LIQUEURS
66 RUE RICHELIEU
ST-JEAN”**

Translation

“Amedée Brault
Wine & Liquor Store
66 Richelieu Street
St-Jean”

This refers to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec — a city with known 19th-century potteries and liquor merchants.

Key Characteristics

  • Material: Salt-glazed stoneware

  • Glaze: Classic Quebec grey glaze with cobalt-blue impressed lettering

  • Shape: “Ovoid shoulder jug” form with small pouring spout

  • Era: Circa 1880–1910

  • Origin: Likely produced by a Quebec pottery supplying local merchants (St-Jean, St-Hyacinthe, or Trois-Rivières pottery centers)

  • Usage: Liquor distribution jug—customers would refill at the merchant’s shop

These merchant-branded jugs are highly collectible today, especially when the stamp is fully readable.

Condition:

  • Very clean surface

  • Blue cobalt lettering intact and sharp

  • No visible cracks or chips

  • Excellent appearance with even glaze

  • Measures:  Approximately 12" tall x 7.5" wide
