Description

Antique Montgomery Ward & Co. Wooden Shipping Crate (Early 1900s)
This is an original wooden shipping crate from Montgomery Ward & Co., the famous Chicago-based mail-order company that operated from the late 1800s through the 20th century. The stenciled lettering on the front reads:

“Montgomery Ward & Co. – General Merchandise – Chicago, Ill.”

The crate is made of pine or a similar softwood, with nailed construction and an aged, naturally worn patina. The top boards appear original and show separation and age-related warp, but they are still present — a big plus for collectors, since many tops were discarded over the years.

These crates were used for shipping general goods nationwide and were disposable at the time, making surviving examples desirable for collectors of advertising, primitives, and Americana.

Condition

  • Wood: Good vintage condition with expected wear, scratches, and darkened patina.

  • Top: Present, but shows separation/warping — typical for this age.

  • Graphics: Strong, readable black stenciling with good eye appeal.

  • Structure: Appears solid overall.

This is a display-worthy example with character.
