Description

Antique Franklin Sugar Refining Company Wooden Crate (Early 1900s)
This is an original branded wooden shipping crate used by the Franklin Sugar Refining Company of Philadelphia, one of the major U.S. sugar producers of the late 19th and early 20th century (famous for the “Franklin Sugar” and later “Domino Sugar” brands).

The stenciling reads:

  • “2 lb. Cartons – 120 lbs.”

  • “Extra Fine Granulated Sugar”

  • “Packed For Franklin Sugar Refining Company, Philadelphia”

The crate is constructed of nailed tongue-and-groove panels with reinforced corner boards, typical of industrial crates from the 1900–1930 period.

Shipping crates for sugar products are highly collectible because many were discarded after use, and those with strong, readable stenciling like this one are especially desirable.

Condition

  • Wood: Strong patina with visible wear, knot holes, scratches, and age darkening—exactly what collectors look for.

  • Lettering: Good visibility; some areas worn but overall bold and readable.

  • Structure: Seems solid and intact.

  • Age texture: Excellent authentic wear, not refinished—adds vintage appeal.

  • Measurement: 22.5" wide x 15.25" deep x 13.75" tall

This is a good, honest primitive advertising crate, ideal for kitchen décor, country store displays, or collector shelving.
