Description

Antique Shaker-Style Wooden Firkin / Sugar Bucket (Late 1800s–Early 1900s)

This is a classic wooden firkin, also known as a sugar bucket or pantry pail. These were widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for storing sugar, flour, lard, and dry goods.

Key features visible in your piece:

Construction

  • Bentwood staved body with two wooden bands around the base area

  • Wooden swing handle (original)

  • Wooden lid with overlapping finger-lap (Shaker-style) and square cut nails

  • Warm, oxidized patina consistent with age

  • Partial remaining paper label on the front—likely a product label or scenic graphic, typical of commercial firkins once sold in country and general stores.

Age

Likely circa 1880–1920 based on:

  • Bentwood handle style

  • Square/early nails

  • Method of band attachment

  • Label style and wear patterns

Condition

  • Exterior: Heavy, honest wear with scratches and surface use marks

  • Label: Partially missing but still adds period charm

  • Bands: Intact, though showing age and patina

  • Handle: Present and attached, which increases value

  • Structure: Appears solid overall

Collectors prefer untouched, original surfaces—your piece has desirable patina.
