Description

Antique “Peptonoids” Wooden Dovetail Shipping Crate (Late 1800s – Early 1900s)

This is an original advertising shipping crate for Peptonoids, a medical nourishment/tonic product sold in the late 19th and early 20th century. Peptonoids was marketed as a “predigested food” and often sold to pharmacies and doctors’ offices. These crates held bottles or cans and were shipped to druggists.

Key Features

  • Bold stenciled lettering reading “PEPTONOIDS”

  • Finger-jointed (dovetail) corners, typical of 1880s–1910 era crates

  • Solid softwood construction, likely pine

  • Dark, aged patina and wear consistent with genuine antique use

  • Pharmaceutical/medical advertising crates are more scarce than grocery or farm crates

  • Measures: 12.25" wide x 8.75" tall x 0.75" deep

This type of crate is desirable to collectors of medical antiques, apothecary items, and primitive advertising.

CONDITION

  • Strong, readable graphics

  • Some surface wear, scratches, staining

  • Nice uniform aged patina

  • A visible age crack across the center front (common and still collectible)

  • Structurally appears intact

Overall: Good antique condition with strong visual appeal
