Description

Antique Clarence Schellenger & Co. Wooden Fish Crate Panel
Cape May, New Jersey – Early 1900s

This is an original wooden crate side from Clarence Schellenger & Co., a fish and seafood packing business historically located in Cape May, NJ. Cape May has long been a major fishing and seafood hub, and crates like this were used to ship fresh fish regionally.

Key Features

  • Strong black stenciling:
    “CLARENCE SCHELLENGER & CO.”
    “PHONE 71”
    “CAPE MAY, N.J.”

  • Central fish graphic, clear and visually appealing

  • Original softwood slat construction

  • Rustic patina with attractive grain and age marks

  • Framed edges indicate it was cut from a crate and mounted for display (a common preservation method)

Businesses that included phone numbers in advertising typically date from the 1900–1930 era. Phone numbers that short (just “71”) suggest very early telephone service, reinforcing the 1910s–1920s timeframe.

PERIOD

🟢 Circa 1910–1925

Early fish and seafood crate brands from East Coast fishing towns are relatively scarce and highly collectible.

CONDITION

  • Stenciling readable and nicely aged

  • Wood shows natural darkening, some knot marks, and wear

  • Stenciling slightly faded but still strong for its age

  • Mounted or framed for stability—prevents further splitting

  • Excellent wall-display presence

  • Measures: 27" long x 11.5" tall x 1" thick (border)

Overall: Good+ antique condition, highly decorative.
