Description

Ornate black and white item is a piece of Thai Nielloware jewelry @ 1940s

This brooch is marked "Bronze"

Niello is a black metallic compound, typically an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, that is inlaid into engraved silver (or sometimes gold) and then fired and polished to create a high-contrast design.

Historical Context: This style of jewelry was widely sold to American soldiers and tourists in the post-WWII era, making it a popular vintage collectible today

Origin and Technique: The item features a design created using the niello technique, which was popular in Thailand (then called Siam) from the 1930s through the 1970s.
