Description

Group of Hardstone Animal Carvings

Mid-20th Century

A group of six mid-20th century hardstone animal carvings, each executed in a different natural stone. The group includes examples carved from rose quartz, carnelian, jasper, soapstone, and quartz or calcite, displaying a pleasing range of color, translucency, and texture.

Forms include reclining and seated rabbits and other stylized animals, each polished and hand-finished with simplified detailing characteristic of decorative export carvings of the period. Natural inclusions and surface variations are present, inherent to the materials. No major chips or repairs observed.

Sizes range from approximately 1 to 3 inches in length.

A charming and varied assemblage suitable for collectors of hardstone objects, animal carvings, or mineral specimens.

1️⃣ Pale Pink Rabbit (small, upright)

  • Stone: Rose quartz

  • Clues: Soft translucent pink tone, even coloration, vitreous polish

  • Notes: Classic material for small animal carvings

2️⃣ Orange–Red Rabbit (reclining)

  • Stone: Carnelian (chalcedony)

  • Clues: Translucent orange-red body with cloudy internal zoning

  • Notes: Higher quality than opaque agate; nicely polished

3️⃣ Gray-Green Rabbit (reclining)

  • Stone: Soapstone / steatite

  • Clues: Matte to satin finish, opaque, muted coloration

  • Notes: Softer stone, often carved in folk or export work

4️⃣ Dark Brown–Black Animal (elongated form)

  • Stone: Jasper or hardstone agate

  • Clues: Dense, opaque body with natural veining and mottling

  • Notes: Likely jasper rather than onyx due to patterning

5️⃣ Reddish-Brown Rabbit (reclining)

  • Stone: Red jasper

  • Clues: Opaque brick-red tone with subtle internal variation

  • Notes: Solid and well-shaped example

6️⃣ Cream / Pale Translucent Animal (reclining)

  • Stone: Quartz or calcite

  • Clues: Semi-translucent milky body, soft glow under light

  • Notes: Often sold as “white quartz” in mid-century carvings
