Description

HARDSTONE BUNNY LOT

Group of Carved Hardstone Rabbit Figures,
China, 20th century (late Qing to Republic period influence)

A charming group of hand-carved hardstone rabbits, each carved from naturally colored stone varieties including pale celadon-toned stone, mottled green hardstone, and creamy translucent stone. The carvings display traditional stylized rabbit forms with rounded bodies, alert ears, and softly modeled features, emphasizing the natural coloration and translucency of the stone rather than heavy surface detailing.

These types of animal carvings were produced both as scholar’s objects and as decorative symbols, with the rabbit traditionally associated with longevity, cleverness, gentleness, and the Moon in Chinese symbolism.

Materials

  • Mixed hardstones (including jade-like stone, serpentine, quartz-based stone)

  • Natural coloration enhanced by polish

  • Hand-carved, solid stone

(No evidence of modern casting; carving marks and stone variation consistent with hand work.)

Age

20th century, likely early to mid-20th century, reflecting traditional forms rooted in earlier Qing-dynasty carving styles.

Dimensions

  • Sizes vary slightly; all examples are small cabinet / scholar’s desk scale

  • Each measures approximately 1 to 2 inches in length

Condition - see pictures to confirm

  • Overall very good condition

  • No cracks or repairs observed

  • Minor surface wear and natural inclusions consistent with age and stone type
