Description

Nice group of three vintage hand-carved hardstone hippopotamus figures, each carved from a different natural stone and displaying distinct coloration and character. These solid stone carvings date to the mid-20th century and represent the popular decorative animal figures produced in Mexico and South America during this period.

The group includes:

  • One green hippopotamus, carved from jade or jade-type hardstone, likely nephrite jade, exhibiting a soft waxy polish with natural mottling and tonal variation.

  • One cream, gray, and honey-brown hippopotamus, carved from banded calcite onyx (often referred to in the trade as Mexican onyx), with attractive layered coloration and a red inlaid eye.

  • One dark charcoal to black hippopotamus, carved from black calcite onyx or similar dense hardstone, with subtle internal inclusions and a smooth polished surface.

All three figures are hand-worked with rounded forms, simplified detailing, and good proportions. The stones display natural variations inherent to the material. Sizes range from approximately 1½ to 2 inches in length. Overall condition is very good, with minor surface wear consistent with age and handling; no cracks or repairs observed.

A charming and cohesive group of mid-century hardstone animal carvings, suitable for collectors of decorative stone objects or animal figures.
