Description

Chinese Export, Mid-20th Century, with Incised Workshop Mark

Finely hand-carved miniature netsuke depicting a rhinoceros, executed in a creamy natural marine ivory-type material, likely walrus or similar. The animal is sculpted in the round with stylized hide folds, defined horn, and inset dark eyes, the compact proportions and stance characteristic of traditional netsuke form.

Underside fitted with two himotoshi (cord holes) for suspension and bearing an incised Chinese workshop maker’s mark.

Smooth, well-aged surface with warm patina and light handling wear consistent with age. No cracks or repairs observed.

Likely Chinese export work produced for the decorative and collector market in the mid-20th century, following Japanese netsuke tradition.

Length approx. 2 inches.
