Description

Arctic Inuit Scrimshawed Bone Knife with Reindeer & Sled Scene, 19th–Early 20th Century

Carved from a single piece of animal bone, this striking Arctic knife features finely hand-incised scrimshaw decoration depicting reindeer in harness pulling a sled with driver — a powerful and iconic scene of northern subsistence life.

The blade and handle are richly engraved on multiple sides with repeating reindeer figures, bordered by stitched linear framing. The grip is further embellished with cross-hatched bands, providing both visual interest and tactile texture. The darkened engraving retains its original hand-rubbed pigment, creating strong contrast against the warm, naturally aged bone.

Both terminals are pierced with looped openings, a traditional Arctic design feature that suggests suspension, storage, or symbolic balance rather than modern utility alone. The knife displays honest age, patina, and minor surface wear consistent with genuine use and handling over time.

A compelling example of indigenous Arctic craftsmanship, combining functional form with narrative decoration — equally suited for ethnographic collections, folk art assemblages, or serious scrimshaw and Inuit material culture study.
